The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is the physical identity card for non-EU citizens staying in Spain for a longer period. Frequently asked questions
Who is the TIE card for? For foreigners from outside the EU who stay in Spain for a longer period with a residence permit (for example British citizens after Brexit). EU citizens do not get a TIE for a longer stay but the residencia, the green registration certificate.
How long does the TIE application take? On average 4 to 12 weeks. At the appointment you receive a form with a unique code; thirty days later you collect the card.
What is an NIE number? An NIE number (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is a unique identification number for foreigners in Spain. You need it for almost any formal or administrative action, such as working, buying a house or opening a bank account.
Why do I need an NIE number? It is required when buying a home, starting a job, opening a bank account, receiving an inheritance, registering with agencies or even when taking out a phone subscription.
